Open Luna Insight
Launch Luna Insight and log in with your personal login.
You must have your own login — you can’t save collections if you log in with the basic “luna” login.
If you need a personal Luna login, please contact ITS.
Launch the Collection Builder
In Luna: under the file menu, choose: open collection.
(If you don’t see this option, please contact Sean in ITS.)
At the bottom of the collections list is the folder: Pomona College Personal Collection.
Double-click on the folder icon to list its contents.
The first item listed beneath “Pomona College Personal Collection” is a folder called Create new Personal Collection. Double-click on this folder icon to launch the Personal Insight Collection Builder.
Each section of the Collection Builder opens with an overview of that section. The first page you’ll see when you launch the Collection Builder is an overview of the entire process of creating your collection. Click on the Next button at the bottom of the page to go to the next page.
Name and describe your collection
You must name your collection. You cannot easily change the name.
A brief collection description is optional, but highly recommended. You can change this later.
There is a checkbox next to “Allow editing by users in your group.” If you would like other users to be able to edit this collection, leave it checked. If you want to be the only person who can edit this collection, then uncheck this box.

Choose your Cataloging Templates
There are currently (January 2006) three cataloging template choices: Dublin Core, Simple Labels, Simple VRA Core. (If there is another catalog template option you’d like to have, let the ITS Instructional Technology Group know.)
Choose one of the available catalog templates.

Thumbnail Label and Sort Order Fields
Choose how you want your thumbnail images to be labeled with the Labels pull-down menus.
Choose how you want your images sorted with the Sort Order pull-down menus. The sorting is concatenated: images will be sorted first with the first category, then sub-sorted within that listing using the second category, and so on.

Confirmation of Settings and Publishing Collection
Review your choices. If you wish to change anything, use the Back button to return to the setting you want to change. If everything looks good, click the Publish collection button.
You’ll get a little status pop-up window as the collection is published. When it’s finished you’ll be notified with: “Collection Published Successfully.” Close the little pop-up window.
At this point, your collection exists in the list of Pomona College Personal Collections. Of course it’s also empty.
If you’re ready to begin importing media, then click the Import Media button.
(If you don’t want to import media yet, click exit)
Import Media
You can drag folders full of media directly into the Import Media window. If you prefer, you can click the Browse button and look for the folders and files you want to import through the menus. Once you have the media you want to import listed in the Import Media window, click the Import button.
Importing each file to the server can take a while…
As each image is imported, its status will change from “Pending” to “Processing.” Meanwhile, the status bar (next to the blue and white + sign) will announce that it’s “Importing media…” Once that part is done, each image will be uploaded, and it’s status will change from “Processing” to “Uploading” to “Complete.”
Once everything is done importing, the status will read “Finished importing media.”
Once you have imported media, you can select media for cataloging by clicking the button at the top of the window: Step 2: Select Media
Select Media
Selected media is outlined in white. You can select and deselect individual images by clicking on them.
- To select all your imported media, click the Select all button at the bottom of the screen.
- To select only the media on the current page, click Select visible.
- To de-select all the media, click Select none
You can catalog your selected media by clicking the button at the top of the window: Step 3: Catalog Media
Catalog Media
The Catalog Media screen allows you to go through each piece of media, entering information into each of the category fields in your chosen your category template.
Required fields are marked with an asterisk. You can leave other fields blank if you wish. You can enter multiple values in a particular field by separating them with a +
Clicking on the page icon next to each field will bring up a list of existing values. Double-click on a value to send it to that category.
Once you’ve entered catalog information for the piece of media, click the save button.
To restore the record to its last saved state, click restore
To erase the piece media and its record, click delete
When you’re done importing and cataloging, and you’ve saved any changes you made to the catalog, you can close the “Personal Insight” window. Your collection is available in Luna Insight.
