Course Overview:

Alternative Spaces, Alternative Practices is a research seminar into the hows and whys of anternatives art spaces and communities in Los Angeles. Classwork is divided into a reading series, seminar discussion, and field research on the many alternative spaces in Los Angeles. Meetings will take place both in the classroom and in Los Angeles. We will use our research to develop a wiki at The Southern California Institute for the Study of Southern California Institutes, an overview of spaces and organizations in Southern California, focusing on non-commercial and social art practice.

Course Objectives:

Gain a familiarity with contemporary non-commercial and social art practices in Los Angeles.
Develop an aesthetic, critical, and cultural framework for assessing non-commercial and social art practices.
Develop as a group a resource for the study of Los Angeles art spaces.
Build a toolbox of techniques and frameworks for the creation of spaces and collaboratives.

Course Requirements:
Completion of readings and response papers.
Active participation in classroom discussions
Completion of field research.
